To celebrate 3 years and 230 successful projects, the crmStorm team take some time out to send a model rocket into near space using a weather balloon. A big thank you to BOC for providing the helium. After 6 months of planning, building and obtaining approval from the CAA, the crmStorm team filled and released the balloon, aiming to chase it down and retrieve it after its out of this world journey
On board we packed a radio tracker, a backup satellite tracker, an on-board computer to record altitude/temperature and a high definition camera.
Our balloon reached a height of 106,325ft – 3 times the cruising altitude of a commercial jet liner! Click on the arrows to the right to view still shots, our video introduction and a selection of footage from the day
Congratulations to Alastair McEwan from AND Technologies who won the competition with a guess of 102,667ft
